Microsoft 365 is a global product but Australian deployments have specific data residency, privacy, and security obligations. The configuration choices we make for AU customers reflect ASD guidance, Privacy Act expectations, and the AU hybrid work patterns that have settled in since 2020.
Australian data residency
Microsoft 365 offers Australian geo data residency for many workloads including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and Teams chat for tenants provisioned in Australia, with Australia East in Sydney and Australia Southeast in Melbourne as the data centre regions. Data location for specific workloads should be confirmed via Microsoft's data location documentation as some services and features may store certain data outside the selected geo.
ASD Essential 8 alignment
The Australian Signals Directorate Essential 8 maturity model is the de facto baseline for AU business cyber resilience. Microsoft 365 deployments configured with conditional access, MFA, application control, and patching cadences map directly to Essential 8 mitigations at Maturity Level 1 or 2.
Privacy Act and Teams
Microsoft Teams collaboration creates personal information records under the Privacy Act 1988. Channel messages, files, and meeting recordings need retention and access policies that respect APP 5 collection notice and APP 11 security. Microsoft Purview supports the configuration.
